Mural and panel installation basics

Planning wall size, ordering panel sets, and working with installers on murals and scenic papers.

Panels are not rolls

Murals and panelized wallcoverings ship as a numbered set sized to a design height and width. You are not ordering continuous yards for a typical scenic or large-format install. Start in the panels and murals category and read each SKU’s panel dimensions, set count, and repeat notes on the product page.

Measure the wall at multiple heights—ceilings and floors are not always parallel. Compare your maximum width and height to the panel set specification. Ordering one extra panel (when available) can save a project if a strip is damaged during hang.

Layout and sequence

Panels install in manufacturer sequence. Dry-fit layout on the floor or use a digital layout from your installer before adhesive touches the wall. Mark plumb lines for the first panel; cumulative drift is harder to correct on panel seven than on panel one.

Large scenics may span corners or niches—decide whether to center the focal point on a main wall or wrap the hero image. Doorways and windows interrupt the visual; plan breaks where the design tolerates them.

Adhesive, substrate, and environment

Panel products may be vinyl, non-woven, or specialty substrates. Match adhesive to the substrate and mill instructions. Commercial installs often require primer and skim compliance with Type II standards when specified.

Control HVAC during install and for 48 hours after—temperature swings can cause edge lift on large panels. In dry climates, discuss acclimation with your installer; Abilene-area projects often balance low humidity with conditioned interiors.

Working with installers

Share product specs, panel map, and our order confirmation with your installer before hang day. Confirm who supplies adhesive, primer, and lift equipment for tall walls. For hybrid projects using Schumacher prints on adjacent walls, align scheduling so wet walls are not damaged by panel trades.

Photograph each panel number as hung for future reference. If damage occurs, note SKU and panel ID when contacting us—replacement panels depend on mill availability.

When to choose panels vs yardage

Use panels when the design is engineered as a set size—murals, oversized repeats, or height-specific art. Use yardage goods for traditional repeats around a room perimeter. Compare approaches in vinyl vs grasscloth for durability in adjacent corridors, and use the FAQ for ordering minimums.
